Road Trip

Last night, I got to train once again with Royce Gracie. It’s always a terrific experience, and I learned a lot.

Making this a tremendous 24 hours — and no, I didn’t plan it this way — this morning I’m leaving for a month-long trip through Italy and Greece. My mom is retiring, so I’m going to travel with her. We’ve never really had the chance, and I’m grateful for it.

Of course, I’m going to train along the way. Don’t worry, mom knows.

I’ll be starting in Sicily, moving through Italy via Rome, Florence and Venice, and then heading to Athens. I made a Google Map of the places I’m going to try to train (some of the pins are hotels — sadly,  there are no academies on Santorini that I know of). If I have Internet access I’ll try to blog along the way about the places I train.

On the off chance that anyone reading this has academy recommendations, feel free to leave ’em in the comments or email me! Or, if you see a nerdy-looking dude with a black backpack walking through Italy or Greece, just stop the person and ask if they want to train. It’s probably me, and I probably do.

New Comic About The Journey to Blue Belt

Hi folks! Haven’t had much time to post lately, but lots of big things are happening behind the scenes (I’ve been busy with work, training, planning my 40th birthday party on Saturday, preparing for a Royce Gracie seminar on Monday and getting ready to leave the country on Tuesday).

But! I made a new comic that I hope you like. I’ll be posting it to the Toro BJJ Facebook tomorrow, but hey, blog readers get a sneak peek.

Oh, and I might just have a big jiu-jitsu-related announcement soon. I think you’ll be interested. At least, I hope you will. Happy training.

Your First Day Of Jiu Jitsu

Here’s a comic I posted to the Toro BJJ Facebook page a while ago. I’ll try to be better about remembering to cross-post these here, but generally I’ll post to the Toro Facebook first. So kindly like the page if you haven’t already!

Without further ado: some first class dos and don’ts. As always, feel free to tell me what I missed (or add your suggestions for future comics) in the comments.

Do this, don't do that, can't you read the sign?

Roy Marsh on BJJ Brick Podcast

It’s been a busy time with work and training. I have lots of new stuff to post over the new few weeks, but for now, I just want to point y’all at the latest BJJ Brick Podcast, which features my friend Roy Marsh.

Roy is a Royce Gracie black belt, has been training jiu-jitsu under Royce since 2001, and is one of the best and most thoughtful instructors I know. He’s also a martial artist who has trained in numerous different disciplines, and you can see that perspective in the interview. But no spoilers! Go check it out.

(And while you’re at it, you can check out an earlier interview with Roy as well, or read the blog post that they discuss in the current interview.)
